Why is your salary lift lower than the figures published by the certifying body?
Those figures come from surveys answered by people who chose to respond, and people who benefited are far more likely to answer. We discount the reported number by 30% before using it. We would rather be roughly right than flatteringly wrong.
Why does study time count as a cost?
Because it is the largest one. A 200-hour certification costs most people several times the exam fee in time. Leaving it out is the main reason certification ROI is usually overstated.
Why does the answer get worse as I get more senior?
Measured certification lift falls sharply with seniority. At senior levels, hiring decisions lean on demonstrated work rather than credentials, so the same certificate moves the number far less.
